Prof. John Elsworth, academic and translator, Professor Emeritus of University of Manchester. John specialises in Russian literature, principally the early twentieth century with a particular interest in the life and works of Andrey Bely (1880-1934).
Amanda Hopkinson, Director of the British Centre for Literary Translation. Amanda translates from Spanish, Portuguese, and French, most recently Dead Horsemeat by Dominique Manotti and Money to Burn by Ricardo Piglia. She is the Chair of the Writers in Translation Committee of English PEN.
Christopher MacLehose, publisher. Christopher MacLehose was successively Literary Editor of The Scotsman, Editorial Director of Chatto & Windus and William Collins / HarperCollins and Publisher-at-Large of Harvill Press and Harvill Secker. In 2006 Christopher was awarded the London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award in International Publishing.
Susanna Nicklin, Director of Literature at the British Council. Susanna started her career at the Bodley Head publishers and then worked as an international literary agent specialising in translation rights, working with authors such as Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth, Sue Townsend, Fay Weldon and Kate Atkinson. In 2002 she became Director of English PEN, the writers’ association promoting literature, literacy and freedom of expression. She joined the British Council as Director of Literature in October 2005.
Boyd Tonkin, Literary Editor of The Independent since 1996 and founder of The Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. Before that Boyd worked for the New Statesman as social policy editor and became Literary Editor at the New Statesman in 1991.
