This special issue, with a foreword by Her Majesty The Queen, celebrates the Tercentenary of Russia’s imperial capital, known as the Venice of the North and one of the world’s most enigmatic cities – St Petersburg. Most symbolic of cities, St Petersburg is often depicted as representing the fate of Russia in all its splendour and ambiguity. It is a city of empire and of revolution, a city of suffering and siege and a city of national revival.

In her article Between Heaven and Hell Lindsey Hughes tells the story of how Russia’s most charismatic monarch, Peter the Great, founded this mythical city on a swamp. Russia’s renowned art historian, Grigory Sternin, captures the grandeur of the imperial capital with the story of its monumental landmark – the Alexander Column.
