This issue is dedicated to Prince Nikolai Yusupov and his magnificent estate Arkhangelskoe near Moscow. Prince Yusupov was one of the outstanding figures of the Age of Enlightenment. He played a key role in helping to integrate Russian culture with that of contemporary Western Europe. A grandee at the court of the three generations of Russian emperors – Catherine the Great, her son Paul and grandson Alexander I, he was a brilliant statesman and diplomat. Acquainted personally with Voltaire and Diderot, he was famed for his philosophical cast of mind and erudition, as well as for his passion for the arts. His estate Arkhangelskoe near Moscow is an extraordinary creation of this extraordinary man, a shrine to European Enlightenment in the heart of Russia.
