Anne Sebba & A.N. Wilson will discuss The Diaries of Sofia Tolstoy

Saturday, 20 November, 7.30pm

Richmond Upon Thames Literature Festival

In the year marking the centenary of Tolstoy’s death, Anne Sebba joins A.N. Wilson in discussing the fascinating diaries of Leo Tolstoy’s wife, Sofia. Sofia’s life was not an easy one: she idealized her husband, but was tormented by him; even her many children were not an unmitigated blessing and in the background was one of the most turbulent periods of Russian history. These diaries are a testament to a woman of tremendous vital energy and poetic sensibility who, in the face of provocation and suffering, continued to strive for the higher things in life; to remain indomitable.

Anne Sebba is a journalist, author and broadcaster. Since working for the BBC, and Reuters in London and Rome, Anne has written 9 non-fiction books and presented documentaries for radio. She is currently working on a biography of Wallis Simpson called That Woman for publication in 2011.

A.N. Wilson is the author of over twenty novels, including The Sweet Of Pimlico, The Healing Art, the five volumes of The Lampitt Papers, Incline Our Hearts, A Bottle In The Smoke, Vicar Of Sorrows and My Name Is Legion. He has worked as the literary editor of both The Spectator and the Evening Standard and has written widely in many newspapers and periodicals and was the winner of the EM Forster Prize.
