 narrative 
history
 paintings 
of 
a 
much 
earlier 
age. 
In

past, 
because
 of 
his 
use
 of
 highly 
politicised
 subject‐matter, 
he 
has 
occasionally 
been
 referred 
to 
as 
the
 Russian
