Dear Friends, The 4th Russian Film Festival is delighted to present a panorama of the best Russian films at the Apollo Piccadilly shown in Russian with English subtitles. THE MAIN PROGRAMME – 10 award-winning films produced in 2009-2010 • The Ugly Duckling by Garry Bardin - a sparky children’s stop-motion animation with Orwellian overtones deemed so politically subversive it was banned from Russian television. • Truce by Svetlana Proskurina - An unsettling portrayal of provincial Russia • How I Ended This Summer by Alexei Popogrebsky- A gripping psychological thriller set on a Russian island inside the Arctic Circle • Reverse Motion by Andrei Stempkovsky - An existential drama about a mother and son during wartime. • One War by Vera Glagoleva - A deeply touching and controversial film, reassessing the nature of crime and punishment. • Gastarbeiter by Yusup Razykov - An affecting portrayal of labour migrants in Russia, winningly balanced by touches of gentle humour • Sparrow by Yury Shiller - A film about a modern Russian village and the tensions between traditions and contemporary life • The Man at the Window by Dmitry Meskhiev - A romantic tragicomedy with a spectacular performance from award winning Maria Zvonareva • The Golden Mean by Sergei Debizhev- An action packed adventure story woven from secrets, riddles and history starring Renata Litvinova • Star Dogs Belka and Strelka by Svyatoslav Ushakov and Inna Evlannikova - A mind-blowing 3D animation about the soviet space dogs DOCUMENTARIES This year's documentary programme encapsulates the last decade in Russia, offering a window into the real Russia, with screenings of the finest Russian documentaries of the decade. This retrospective includes Vitaly Mansky’s Broadway. The Black Sea (2002), a representation of the world en miniature in this knocked-together summer camp and The Revolution That Wasn’t (2009), Alyona Polunina’s disturbing study of the ‘Other Russia’ movement. This definitive selection of contemporary Russian documentaries is presented by the great director and documentary maker, Vitaly Mansky, president of Russia’s ArtDocFest. ANIMATION In addition to the feature length Ugly Duckling and Star Dogs Belka and Strelka, the Russian Film Festival is showing a comprehensive and diverse programme of animation ready to enchant adults and children alike with its charm and imagination. The festival is proud to include Irina Evteeva’s latest film, the captivating Little Tragedies, based on Alexander Pushkin’s verses, together with several of her previous films, including Petersburg and Faust. The is festival is also delighted to include a retrospective of Garry Bardin’s best work, including Adagio and The Banquet. As well as these three films, we also will be screening a special programme for our young audiences, presenting the best of award-winning Russian animated films of recent years. SPECIAL SCREENINGS This year's film festival also celebrates the works of Leo Tolstoy on film, including Father Sergius (Y. Protazanov), The Living Corpse (V. Vengerov), Anna Karenina (S. Solovyov) and Sergei Bondarchuk’s masterpiece War and Peace. A further screening included in the festival is a selection of the best new short films chosen by Artkino, the annual Russian independent short films festival. In addition we are proud to announce that the final of the 1st Student Short Film Festival is being held during the 4th Russian Film Festival, presented by very special guests. SPECIAL GUESTS We are delighted that Russian film directors and actors will be joining us for Q&As and discussions.
