The first Russian stand at BookExpo America New York, 25 - 27 May 2010 This year the BOOKS FROM RUSSIA stand took part in BookExpo America, the main fair in the American book industry. The stand was organised by the Russian Federal agency for Press and Mass Communications and represented a range of Russian publishers. BookExpo America is currently undergoing major changes, transforming itself from a fair which focused primarily on the domestic market into an international book forum.

A few weeks ago something strange happened. Someone sent me, through the post, ten million printed words – I’ll repeat that, in case you weren’t concentrating: ten million words – nearly half of them in a difficult foreign language. I was told to get reading them.

Alexander Arkhangelsky was born in Moscow in 1962. He graduated in pedagogy and wrote a dissertation about Pushkin. At different times he has been a radio-journalist, written for literary journals and political newspapers, and has taught.

The Yeltsin Foundation undertakes a broad range of educational, scientific, scholarly and cultural projects. They provide a broad range of publishing services and specialise in the publication of fine art albums and Russian and English catalogues of contemporary Russian orthodox icons. The Beanpole Publishing House collaborates with authors and collectors.

Full range of pre-printing services. Yasnaya Polyana Publishes fiction, magazines, calendars, post-cards, notebooks. The publishing house is situated near the birthplace of Leo Tolstoy. Yasnaya Polyana’s aim is to preserve and continue the traditional state-of-the-art production of Russian book manufacture. The publishing house offers services such as prepress, photographic work and design.

Aleksandr Mikhailovich Terekhov was born in June 1966 in the provincial town of Tula in Central Russia. After serving in the army he graduated in journalism from the Moscow State University. He soon won acclaim as a writer with his stories about his army experiences and about the early perestroika chaos he was witnessing.

Whatever else he might do, Dmitry Bykov is sure to cause a lively debate by his audacious originality!

After establishing together with Academia Rossica the Rossica Translation Prize, the only prize for literary translation from Russian into English in the world, the foundation has subsequently establishes prizes for literary translation from Russia into French and Italian, with Spanish and German soon to follow.
