The Living Corpse is based on a Tolstoy play set in Moscow. It follows the fortunes, or rather misfortunes, of one Fyodor Protasov.
He arrives in the city one day to plead to the Holy Synod to get a divorce from his wife. She loves another, a government minister, and he doesn’t want to stand in their way. Very noble, but the problem is that the church won’t let him.
