synopsis

Based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, a novelette by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann.

It's 1920s Vienna. Nine-year-old Mary (Elle Fanning) lives in a house which is filled with lovely things but is also very lonely. She is continually bothered by her bratty brother Max (Aaron Michael Drozin) and neglected by her well intentioned but extremely busy parents. On Christmas Eve, her beloved Uncle Albert (Nathan Lane) presents her with a gift: a wooden nutcracker doll. Mary's imagination brings the doll to life and together they embark on a wonderful journey to a world of children's dreams, miracles and adventures. But an army of rats, led by the cunning Rat King and his evil mother the Rat Queen, capture the city and enslave its people as they plan to wipe humanity off the face of the Earth. The Nutcracker (Shirley Henderson) gathers his friends and they prepare to fight the rats, but he is captured by the enemy. Defeating the rats and freeing the Nutcracker will not be easy...
