Covering Russian Literature Week 2009
20-26 April LBF and Waterstones, Piccadilly
Academia Rossica’s Russian Literature Week 2009 will see some of the most important figures in the Russian literary world congregate in London for 6 days in April. High profile writers, commentators, publishers, critics, politicians and translators will be taking part in a series of events that are intended to showcase a selection of the best talent within Russian culture.
For its principal focus Russian Literature Week will be putting six sparkling Russian writers under the spotlight in talks and discussions taking place in London and across the UK. These authors range from the robust and important Dmitry Bykov (his book ‘Jewhad’ is forthcoming in English) to Vladimir Makanin whose latest novel dissects violence in Chechnya and Alexander Terekhov and his bitter satires on Russian provincial life.
Also present will be Mr Seslavinsky, Russian Minister for Press and Mass Communication; Mr Yuri Fedotov, Russian ambassador to the UK; Alexander Arkhangelsky, the prominent TV presenter, political commentator and writer; and other Russian poets, critics and literary journalists who work in all parts of the Russian cultural scene.
With a base at Academia Rossica’s stand at the London Book Fair, there are dozens of events planned. These will be taking place at the LBF, every evening at Waterstone’s Piccadilly and at venues across the country including Bristol, Oxford, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and Cambridge.
Russian Literature Week is a unique opportunity to listen to, and meet, those at the forefront of contemporary literary developments. With many speaking of an efflorescence of Russian writing, direct access at such a moment is an un-missable chance to discover new angles on Russian culture and modern Russia itself.
Press accreditation will include free tickets to all events and privileged contact with those involved. Interviews can be scheduled, if required, with each of the visiting writers. A full programme for the week is available here: http://www.academia-rossica.org/en/literature/russian-literature-week-2009/programme2.
