Welcome to the 4th SLOVO Russian Literature Festival!
With 25 events in 21 days, ACADEMIA ROSSICA brings you leading Russian writers including Dmitry Bykov, Mikhail Shishkin, Vera Polozkova, Vladimir Sharov and Evgeny Vodolazkin for a unique and captivating celebration of the literature and culture of Russia today.
From Pushkin to Pelevin, Dostoevsky to Shishkin, Mayakovsky to Bykov – literature has always been Russia’s calling card and writers have been its most important ambassadors. And undoubtedly, when speaking about the relationship between Britain and Russia, it is historically the literary links that have been the strongest ties between the two countries. It is therefore no surprise then that the only festival of Russian literature outside Russia was established in London! And in its fourth year in 2013, SLOVO is now expanding beyond London with a series of events in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh.
We are thrilled to be welcoming some of the greatest living Russian writers to join us in exploring the best in contemporary Russian literature. They will be joined by translators, academics, and journalists for a series of exciting events! We are delighted that you are able to join us in this celebration of Russian literature!

We are delighted to welcome poetry sensation Vera Polozkova for the Opening Night of SLOVO Festival 2013. Known for her dramatic poetry readings, often accompanied by a live band, Polozkova has gone from an unknown blogger to an award-winning representative of a new generation of writers. She now brings her unique style to London to entertain and enlighten with her sharp cultural commentary.

He will discuss his books with Oliver Ready, winner of the Rossica Prize, who translated Sharov’s novel Before and During for English audiences and who has most recently translated Crime and Punishment for a new Penguin Classics edition.

Ever wanted to talk to unique people like Arvo Pärt? Or Yury Norstein? Or Noam Chomsky? Publisher, translator and philosopher Arnis Ritups presents a magazine unlike any other: Rīgas Laiks (русское издание). The magazine publishes unusual in-depth interviews with interesting personalities, including philosophers, scientists, composers, historians, artists and writers from around the world, as well as high quality Russian translations of some of the best contemporary essays. It is a continuation of the Latvian magazine Rīgas Laiks, published since 1993.
The idea of the magazine originated in conversations with Alexander Piatigorsky (1929-2009), one of the most interesting Russian philosophers, a specialist of Buddhist thought and professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. In 2005 the current publishers of the magazine produced a mirthful portrait of Piatigorsky in a documentary Philosopher Escaped (directed by Uldis Tīrons, the editor-in-chief of the magazine). In the kitchens of communal flats in St. Petersburg and walking the Himalayas, in Paris cafes and Buddhist monasteries, along the streets of London and the waters of the sacred Ganges Piatigorsky and his friends always return in their conversations to the same subject. It is a matter of greatest importance to each and every one of us, the common people, a question of our death and the place of death in our lives.

Alexander Etkind, Professor of Russian Literature and Cultural History at King’s College, University of Cambridge, is joined by Dmitry Bykov to discuss Etkind’s book ‘Internal Colonisation: Russia’s Imperial Experience’, which takes a post-colonial approach to Russian cultural history to explore how the Russian empire took control of its own lands in the 19th Century and the role that writers played in this process.
Dmitry Bykov is one of Russia’s most prominent and admired writers and public intellectuals, renowned for his novels, biographies, essays and literary criticism.

Known primarily as a film director, Mikhail Segal is also quickly becoming a highly regarded name in the world of Russian literature. His first collection of prose, titled ‘Youth’ was published in 2010, and is followed this year with the collection ‘Short Stories’. In 2012 he directed the film Short Stories, which won numerous major awards, including Best Screenplay at the 23rd Kinotavr Festival, and was screened at the 6th London Russian Film Festival and the 56th BFI Film Festival. Segal will talk about specifics of working with words and with moving images.

Dmitry Bykov is one of the most prolific and influential writers in contemporary Russian literature, with works ranging from the hugely successful biography of Boris Pasternak to the literary sensation ZhD. His books are always deeply philosophical, but at the same time deal with the hottest contemporary issues. His most recent novel, IKS, was released in 2012 to great critical acclaim. He has also developed the ‘Citizen Poet’ project, a series of performances of satirical poetry with strong political overtones inspired by Russian literature.

We are delighted to welcome Mikhail Shishkin, who is in London to mark the publication of the English translation of his critically acclaimed novel The Light and the Dark (originally published in Russian as Pismovnik) by prominent UK publisher Quercus. Mikhail Shishkin’s celebrated fiction engages Russian and European literary traditions and forges and equally expansive vision for the future of literature. He has received numerous literary prizes, including the Big Book Award, the National Bestseller Award and the Russian Booker Prize.
Mikhail Shishkin will be signing copies of his book The Light and the Dark at the Russian Bookshop, Waterstones Piccadilly, from 8pm.

Lev Danilkin has uniquely made literary criticism exciting and even glamorous, and is acknowledged, and feared, as the man who can make or break a book. He started his career after university as the editor-in-chief of the Russian Playboy, and then moved on to the popular cultural digest Afisha, where his reviews are noted for the breadth of their scope and the verve of their writing and are required reading for literate young Russians. He will share his expertise on the current developments in Russian literature and will also talk about his own highly acclaimed non-fiction books.

This unique animated documentary is made up of fragments of well-known émigré writer Sergei Dovlatov’s works, letters and interviews, consisting of details, photographs, drawings, sounds, sorrows… Shot in St Petersburg, The Komi Republic, Tallin, the Pushkin mountains and New York, this film tells a story about living, reflection, and trying to see the world through the eyes of a writer.
Dovlatov’s texts are read by the actor Sergei Puskepalis, with original music written for the film by the group Billy’s Band.

Ever wondered what the life of a holy fool looked like? Evgeny Vodolazkin’s latest novel is a dynamic postmodern page-turner which gives a vivid impression of life in medieval Russia and enables the reader to understand the minds of people living at this time. It is full of adventure, playful, witty, but never didactic. This is the real world of Old Russia. Originally known as an academic expert in Old Russian Literature, Evgeny Vodolazkin was catapulted to prominence in 2009 by his hugely popular debut novel Solovyov and Larionov, which was shortlisted for three major awards: the Andrei Bely Prize, the Big Book Award and the Nos Literary Prize. Vodolazkin’s latest novel, Lavr, shuns the clichés of historical fiction in favour of capturing the spirit and power of the ancient texts that he knows so well.
Evgeny will also be with us to celebrate 1000 years since the writing of the Russian Primary Chronicle, considered the beginning of Russian literature. He will be sharing his experience both as a contemporary writer and an academic expert in the field of early Russian literature.

Дебютный роман "Соловьев и Ларионов вошел в шор-листы Премии Андрея Белого, Большой книги и премии НОС. Специалист по средневековой русской литературе, глубокий исследователь и тонкий стилист, Водолазкин, конечно же, черпает из источника литературной традиции – и образы, и сюжеты, и вдохновение. Так и в новом романе Водолазкина «Лавр» счастливое соотношение писательского таланта и блестящее знание жизни в Древней Руси и владение языком того времени – как всегда, вопреки стереотипам исторической беллетристики – позволило передать в увлекательной современной прозе дух и силу древних текстов.
Так же в этом году мы празднуем, ни больше ни меньше, 1000-летний юбилей начала “Повести временных лет”, - а значит и всей русской литературы!
Евгений Водолазкин - в одном лице и известный современный писатель, и выдающийся литературовед-древнерусник - расскажет о том, с чего началась русская литературе. Как судьба литературы развивалась через традицию и новаторство. И как древние тексты обретают новую жизнь в «современных» литературах разных эпох, включаю собственное творчество исследователя и писателя.

We are honoured and delighted to be joined by these three eminent translators, but of course they only represent one part of a community of translators who bring works of Russian writers to an English-speaking audience. We therefore invite a host of other translators to join us in celebrating the often unsung heroes of the literary world. This conversation will represent three generations of literary translators as Oliver Ready was taught by Hugh Aplin who was in his turn taught by Arch Tait!
This event also marks the launch of an exciting new online resource for translators of Russian: TranslatingRussia.org. This website will serve as a central hub for translators of Russian literature, publishers, literary agents and students of translation. It will feature masterclass blogs from leading translators, a showcase of the best recent translations, and information about upcoming literary events and prizes, but will most importantly provide a social media platform for publishers and translators to contact each other in order to collaborate on new projects.

Этот сайт задуман как современная и удобная платформа для сотрудничества переводчиков и издателей, обмена опытом и экспертными мнениями ведущих переводчиков и развития интернациональной школы перевода русской литературы на иностранные языки.

Gogol is one of the most mysterious of all Russian authors, but is simultaneously one of the keys to understanding both future literary eras and the past foundations of Russia’s great spiritual and literary traditions. As a Russian Dante, Gogol travels through the metaphysical geography of Russian life, culture and history, leaving clues for future travellers. The only question is whether we can now interpret those clues.
Professor Ivan Esaulov is a well-known researcher of Russian literature and author of numerous books and articles. The title of his latest work, ‘Russian Classics, a New Understanding’, speaks for itself. In an attempt to identify the archetypal paradigms of Russian literature, Esaulov turns to the world of Gogol to find a new path.

Профессор Иван Есаулов известный исследователь русской литературы, автор нескольких книг, в которых он переосмысливает историю словесности в России. Название последнего труда Есаулова „Русская классика: новое понимание“ говорит само за себя. В попытке выявить архетипические парадигмы русской литературы в их соотношении с "миром Запада" автор обращается к миру Гоголя, чтобы по-новому прочертить намеченный писателем маршрут.

Irina Yasina is a leading human rights activist, journalist, and writer who has worked for major publications and news agencies including Interfax, The Moscow News, The Moscow Times and Echo of Moscow, as well as having been on the board of directors for the Open Russia Foundation established by Mikhail Khodorkovsky. She is also well known as a blogger, providing insightful commentary into Russia’s often turbulent political situation. Her autobiographical novel ‘History of an Illness: an Attempt at Happiness’, an account of living with multiple sclerosis, was shortlisted for the NOS Prize in 2011, and Yasina now campaigns tirelessly for an improvement in rights for disabled people in Russia.

В разное время Ирина сотрудничала с разными ведущими российскими СМИ, а также входила в совет директоров Фонда “Открытая Россия”, учрежденного М.Б. Ходорковским. Она также известна как блоггер – и именно ее проницательный комментарий к перепетиям современной российской общественной жизни (читай – истории) с нетерпением ждут и читатели, и эксперты.
Ирина Ясина расскажет о своей книге “История болезни. В попытках быть счастливой”. Это книга о том, как не сдаваться, автобиографический рассказ о жизненной драме и надежде. “История болезни” вошла в шорт-лист Премии НОС в 2011 году.

This evening is dedicated to the life and work of Joseph Brodsky, featuring a screening of ‘Joseph Brodsky: Conversation With a Heavenly Being', a film based around a conversation that took place in New York in 1993 between Brodsky and critic Solomon Volkov which offers a revealing insight into Brodsky's own identity and understanding of himself, his destiny, poetry and world order. We are pleased to be joined by Brodsky expert and biographer Valentina Polukhina.

В ходе вечера, посвященного жизни и творчеству Иосифа Бродского, прозвучат стихи и состоится показ анимационно-документального фильма Романа Либерова «Иосиф Бродский. Разговор с небожителем». В основе фильма – интервью с Бродским, записанное в 1993 году в Нью-Йорке музыковедом Соломоном Волковым . Как и поэзия Бродского, фильм составлен из множества воспоминаний и фрагментов, в том числе подготовленных крупнейшей исследовательницей творчества Бродского Валентиной Полухиной. Валентина Платоновна любезно согласилась присоединится к нам, чтобы поговорить о последнем Великом Поэте.
